jonnymullins I don't think I'm a good enough writer to briefly summarise this album in a way that does it justice. All I feel I can say is that it makes me uncomfortable, it makes me angry, it thrills me, it pumps me up, it brings me down, it makes me feel alive, it makes me wish I was dead... it's an album that grabs hold of your emotions, rips them apart from every direction and hands them back to you when and only when it wants to. Oh and the trumpet solo on I'm 14 is the best thing I've heard this year. Favorite track: I'm 14.

Down a dirt road in the middle of nowhere Ohio There’s hundreds of motorcycles parked out in a clearing Fire archery out in the woods Pigs roasting A heavy metal band Inside there’s a bar and a guy named Randy Who would play a cover of any song you told him We drank for free all night and hung out with the three bikers we met earlier at the McDonald's parking lot We had the time of our lives They offered us a place to stay They didn’t live far Coach and Ron and the other guy whose name I can’t remember Ron was wearing a leather vest that's sewn onto it the American flag So his biker nickname was Captain America So we ride to this guy’s house The youngest of the three A fireman and recently divorced I think it’s the coolest thing Riding through the night to this house We get inside and he has a whole room Full of assault rifles all over the wall He’s got all kinds of handguns and swords They ask us if we smoke weed And they roll up a blunt We smoke Then we realize none of the three bikers are smoking Then it kind of hits us that we've been drugged Before I know it I’m in handcuffs And they're trying to take me into this bedroom They say they just wanna film me in the handcuffs Because it was funny or whatever My friends don’t let it happen We’re freaked out because obviously we've been drugged And we don't know with what Coach, I think, went home And the firefighter man went to sleep And me and my friends slept on the couch together We woke up in the morning And one of our friends had disappeared We couldn't find him anywhere There was a video camera sitting on the coffee table We’re ready to fight We woke up at 7:00 in the morning And we have to get the fuck out of here We find our friend in the attic on a stained mattress And he’s naked down to his underwear He doesn't know what happened We don't know what happened We get back downstairs and D is like “Look at this” He plays back the camcorder that was sitting on the coffee table And Captain America was jerking off He was filming himself jerking off on us While we were asleep Saying the most foul, vile shit that you could possibly imagine We’re whispering ‘Cause Captain America's passed out on this little, like, chair in the living room But Chris is so angry he records himself saying like “My name is __________ I work at the LensCrafters store number 664 Lehigh Valley Mall Come to Pennsylvania and fucking find me, bitch”

about

The new album from Brooklyn noise-rock group Couch Slut has finally arrived. "Take A Chance on Rock n Roll" is the band's first full-length since 2017's "Contempt" and was initially released on the May 1st, 2020 as an unannounced surprise on Bandcamp's no-fee day. Gilead Media is pleased to once again work with one of America’s most sonically vicious bands to bring this new work to the world.

Those familiar with Couch Slut's relentless, sludging, noisy style will be pleased to find many of their favorite components of the band’s signature sound vividly present and pushed to an absolute extreme. Ripping guitars tearing through riff after riff following a punishing rhythm section that refuses to give you a moment’s respite. Scathing vocals suffocating any small sonic space left breathing within the songs. Couch Slut strip away all pretense and focus their power entirely upon exploring new colors and moods within their writing while somehow sacrificing zero strength or energy. Even during tracks that clock in at a slower tempo there is still an unimpeachable intensity that rivals any concept of traditional “heaviness” and renders it truly weak by comparison.

The band’s lyrical content continues to push the boundaries of the listener’s comfort by broaching themes of drug use, mental illness, trauma (all topics past listeners will find familiar in Couch Slut’s music), while also discussing issues of underage prostitution and domestic violence. The weight and importance of these topics is handled masterfully and truly forces the listener to deeply evaluate a large volume of emotional responses by the end of their listening experience.
This album is not a casual listening experience by any stretch. This is an active experience. When you press play on this album you must be prepared to be affected. You will not simply listen to these songs, you will feel them deep within your gut. This is not background music. There is nothing passive about this.

“Take A Chance on Rock n Roll” was recorded and mixed at Strange Weather in Brooklyn by Ben Greenberg and mastered by at Telegraph Mastering by Adam Gonsalves. The album will be presented on CD and LP formats, alongside the requisite digital availability, all courtesy of Gilead Media.
